Three Decades of Edmonton Foundations
I'm Darren. I've spent about thirty years around foundations in this region. What I do now is spend 45 to 90 minutes on yours and write down exactly what I find, with a photograph behind every line of it.
How I Work
I don't quote or carry out repair work on any property I inspect. I don't pitch anything while I'm in your basement. And I'm not an engineer — where a finding calls for an engineered opinion, I say so and tell you who to ask.
The inspection is the job. The report is what you keep.
Why I Started Doing Inspections
Thirty years of working around foundations teaches you one thing above all others: most of what worries a homeowner is not the thing that matters. A hairline crack down a basement wall reads as a catastrophe to somebody seeing it for the first time. A slight bow in the same wall, which is the one worth talking about, often goes unnoticed for years.
Telling those apart takes time on the property. It means measuring the crack rather than looking at it, checking whether the floor above has moved, walking the grading outside to see where the water actually goes, and then looking at the doors and windows on the far side of the house to see whether they tell the same story. That's 45 to 90 minutes of work, and it is not something anybody can do from the driveway.
So I started FoundationInspection.ca to do exactly that, and to write it down properly. Every finding goes into a written report within 48 hours, with a photograph attached and a plain-language call on whether to monitor it, act on it, or take it to an engineer. No jargon, no severity scores out of ten.
I don't quote or carry out repair work on any property I inspect. The report is yours: take it to whichever contractor you like, use it in a negotiation, give it to your insurer or your lawyer, or file it away as a baseline to compare against in a few years' time.
My Values
The principles that guide everything I do.
A Clear Line
I don't quote or carry out repair work on any property I inspect. The inspection is the whole job, and the report is yours to take anywhere.
Honesty
I tell you what I observe, whether it's good news or concerning. No exaggeration, no minimizing, no agenda.
Experience
About 30 years around foundations in this region. Most of that is knowing what genuinely fails and what merely looks alarming.
Respect
Your home is important. I respect your time, your property, and your right to make informed decisions.
Local Expertise, Local Service
I focus exclusively on the Edmonton region because local knowledge matters. Edmonton's clay soils, freeze-thaw cycles, and construction practices create unique foundation challenges. I understand these conditions because I work with them every day.
When you hire me, you're getting an inspector who knows Edmonton neighborhoods, understands local building patterns, and recognizes what's typical versus concerning for foundations in our climate.
